I’m all about the sun – I love a healthy golden tan, doing outdoor activities, spending time on the beach sipping on some iced tea and just enjoying the warm glow of the sun. In fact, I just got back from my trip to Bintan where we rode Vespas and chased the sun, and I’m now a couple of shades darker!
But all that doesn’t change the fact that I’m very conscious about sun safety! Some terrifying effects of sun damage include sunburn, premature skin aging, and even skin cancer. You might not realise it, but exfoliating your skin or using acne treatments actually makes your skin even more susceptible to the sun. So if you’re a fan of AHAs and BHAs like I am, remember to layer up with sunscreen!
If you’re already applying sunscreen, that’s fantastic! However, are you applying enough? According to the American Academy of Dermatology, most people are only using 25-50% of the amount of sunscreen actually required. Most adults need at least a whole ounce – roughly two tablespoons worth – for our whole body, and a nickel sized amount just for our faces. So if you’re just dabbing it on, that juuuuust might not be sufficient.
For myself, I always ensure I have a layer of SPF 50 on before I even apply any make up on, and I pop a little sunblock stick in my bag for an on the go re-application. And while I love tanning, I try to only do so in the late afternoon, around 3pm onwards. This is because the sun in the afternoon tends to be at its most relentless, and thus there is a higher chance of sun damage. Lastly, keep a pair of sunglasses and hat with you when you know you’re going to be out in the sun! The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most sensitive, and a little extra protection never hurts.
Even if you're not going on a tropical vacation, remember to stay protected anywhere there might be sun - and that includes even in the dead of winter, because as long as the sun is peeking through, there is still a possibility of sun damage!
